Online markets can make the abortion pill seem as harmless as purchasing over-the-counter cough syrup. But it is not. The abortion pill uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to terminate a pregnancy.
When you order the abortion pill online, you are not able to verify the quality of these drugs. Without the proper dosage, the abortion pill can become ineffective and may result in an incomplete abortion.
FDA Regulations
In 2021, the FDA closely examined the process of prescribing Mifeprex (mifepristone). The final regulations for Mifeprex explain that this drug should only be administered under the supervision of a licensed, accredited healthcare professional. When ordering an abortion online, you have no doctor to oversee the process and it goes against FDA requirements.
Severe Risks Are Possible
Occasionally, the abortion pill can cause severe side effects that require prompt, medical attention. These can include:
- Heavy bleeding — soaking two or more pads an hour for two hours
- Severe abdominal or back pain
- Fever lasting more than 24 hours
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
