What an Ultrasound Can Show
A pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG, which signals that a pregnancy may be present. But a positive test alone cannot tell you where the pregnancy is located, how far along you are, or whether the pregnancy is viable. That is where an ultrasound becomes an essential next step.
One of the most critical things an ultrasound can determine is the location of the pregnancy. In a healthy pregnancy, a fertilized egg implants and grows inside the uterus. Occasionally, implantation occurs somewhere else, most commonly in a fallopian tube. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy, which cannot survive or be carried to term. As the pregnancy grows, the fallopian tube can rupture, leading to internal bleeding that can become life-threatening very quickly.
An ultrasound can also assess fetal viability, which indicates whether the pregnancy is developing as expected. This includes evaluating whether a fetal heartbeat is present, one of the earliest indicators that a pregnancy is progressing. If a heartbeat is absent or the pregnancy does not appear to be developing, this may indicate a miscarriage is occurring or has already taken place.
Finally, an ultrasound can establish gestational age, giving you a clearer picture of how far along you are and what that means for your health and your options going forward.
How Ultrasound Results Shape Your Care
Once you have a clearer picture of your pregnancy, the path forward becomes more defined.
If the ultrasound reveals concerns such as an ectopic pregnancy or signs of miscarriage, seeking prompt medical care becomes the immediate priority. Catching these conditions early can prevent serious complications and protect your long-term health.
If the pregnancy appears healthy and progressing, you can begin weighing your options with a fuller set of facts. Knowing your gestational age clarifies which options are medically and legally available to you, whether you are considering abortion, parenting, or adoption, and provides an estimated due date as you think through what comes next.
