Elective abortion access in Indiana is changing due to new legislation taking effect on September 15, 2022. If you think you may be pregnant but do not want to be, here is what you need to know. Â
What is Indiana Abortion Law?
Before September 15, 2022
Currently, Indiana law permits elective abortion up to 20 weeks gestation.Â
If the woman’s health is endangered, abortion is available after 20 weeks.Â
Life-saving medical treatment will always be available, no matter what legislation a state enacts about elective abortion.
On or After September 15, 2022
Starting September 15, Indiana abortion access will be limited to certain cases and timeframes.Â
These cases include a lethal fetal anomaly, the health or life of the woman, or pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.Â
What Are My Options?
The many changes in abortion access can feel overwhelming and downright scary, especially if you are facing an unexpected pregnancy.Â
We want you to know that you aren’t alone. Here are some steps to take as you consider what’s next.
1. Confirm You Have a Viable Pregnancy.
Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable, but they don’t tell the whole story.
It’s rare, but it’s possible to have a positive home pregnancy test without actually having a progressing pregnancy.
2. Determine How Long You Have Been Pregnant.
Whether you are medically eligible for a medical abortion or a surgical abortion is based on a few different factors, including how long you have been pregnant.Â
An ultrasound will confirm if you have a progressing pregnancy and how long you have been pregnant.
Because abortion in Indiana is currently based on the number of weeks you have been pregnant, you will want to confirm how far along you are. It will also be part of your planning process if you consider traveling out of state for an abortion.Â
3. Get Tested for STDs.Â
Regular STD testing is a great habit for prioritizing your health in general, and it’s especially important to consider if you are pregnant.Â
PID (a serious pelvic infection) is a potential complication of abortion, and having an untreated STD such as chlamydia and BV may increase your risk of developing it.
