Before You Decide — What You Should Know

An informed decision starts with accurate information. Here are some of the most common questions women have when considering abortion.

Not necessarily. If you are within the first nine to ten weeks of pregnancy, you may be eligible for a medication abortion (the abortion pill), which does not involve surgery. However, if you are further along, a surgical procedure may be required. An ultrasound will help determine your options.

Types of Abortion Procedures

The type of procedure available depends on how far along you are. An ultrasound is the most accurate way to determine gestational age. A Hope Center provides free ultrasounds to help you understand your options.

The abortion pill (RU486) is known as a medical abortion. This procedure uses two powerful medications:

Mifepristone (First Pill)

Blocks the hormone progesterone, commonly referred to as the "pregnancy hormone." This causes the lining of the uterus to thin and prevents the fetus from staying implanted.

Misoprostol (Second Pill)

Causes cramping for your body to expel the fetus. Taken 24–48 hours after the first pill.

Important: There is a higher risk of incomplete abortion with the medication method, which may require a follow-up surgical abortion. An ultrasound is necessary to ensure the pregnancy is within FDA guidelines and to confirm it is not an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, which can be life-threatening.

Potential Side Effects & Risks

Like any medical procedure, abortion carries risks. Understanding these potential side effects is an important part of making an informed decision about your health.

Like any medical procedure, abortion comes with a variety of side effects and risks. Common physical side effects include:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Cramping
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Possible infection
  • Damage to cervix
  • Perforated uterus
  • Inability to have future children

Be sure to discuss all potential risks with your healthcare provider before any procedure.
